What Can
You Do With Knoesis?
Store Library
Research: Install a copy of Knoesis on your laptop. As you consult
each new source, enter the bibliographic information into a source record.
Then, as you find notable passages or want to record some thoughts,
just enter them into a new card. That card can be easily linked to the
source, and to any subjects or keywords which seem appropriate. And
now your notes are easy to find, access, and organize.
Prepare Your Lecture:
Use the cards to take notes on the subjects you are covering in class,
or incorporate your research into class presentations. Link each relevant
card to a subject, say Phil 130 Lecture 1. Then, using the "export
order" box, arrange them in whatever order you like (and add further
cards or comments as you go). Once they are organized, you can export
them into a rich text file (using the menu: Export >> This Subject).
Open the file, and print. Voila! Instant lecture.
Write a Paper: Move
seamlessly from initial research, to organization, to the first draft
of your paper. Add the relevant notes and quotes to a subject (e.g.
AI Review 1, which can be found in the sample database). Then,
using the "export order" feature of the subject cards, arrange
the cards in an order appropriate to your argument (those who use paper
index cards for this will be right at home). As things take shape, you
can add more cards, or make further comments on the cards already there.
You can also format the text and use different fonts. By the time you
are ready to export the cards to a rich text word processor file, the
paper will be almost written. And the best part of it is, Knoesis can
automatically append a list of references!
Keep Class Notes:
Keeping your class notes on electronic index cards can have many advantages.
If you arrange them by subject or keyword, you can export them to a
rich text file for an easy to read study guide. Or when it comes time
to write your term paper, it is easy to incorporate class material (with
no retyping!) And with all your class notes in one place, you may notice
connections between classes which you would have missed by using separate
notebooks.
